Self-Care is a Responsibility

wellness for women and mothers self-care

We’ve become so busy with the demands of our modern life that it's easy to forget that self-care is not a luxury, but a vital necessity. Let this be your reminder to take responsibility of your own well-being and make self-care a priority in your life.

It’s so easy to rush through our skincare routine so we can get on with our day. Early in motherhood, I would have days where I’d simply forget to brush my teeth until 2pm or I’d take the quickest shower possible so my husband wouldn’t have to deal with a crying baby begging for mama’s milk. I was feeling less and less like myself over time.

When I became aware of this, I taped a note to my bathroom mirror reminding me to be present during my self-care rituals. The note said, “Self-care is your responsibility, no one else’s. Be present during self-care rituals. Make sure you get what you need so you can serve, love and live from a place of fulfillment and authenticity.” And this note helped me so much! It prompted me to do my very basic morning and night routines slowly and to actually enjoy things like applying my serums and creams. It didn’t matter what was going on, I needed and deserved to have this moment for me. The note served as a powerful reminder every morning and evening.

Self-care looks different on everyone. I know this seems counterintuitive, but lately, for me, self-care means staying up late. It’s not sustainable, but it brings me peace and joy at this moment in my life. As a mom, I spend my days not belonging to myself. The only time left for me is when everyone is asleep. I stay up a little longer just to have some time where I’m not needed by anyone and I can tend to my own needs. Sometimes it means I sit on my laptop to work (which is how it’s currently 10:40 pm and I’m sitting here writing this post). Other times, it means scrolling mindlessly through Instagram to catch up on the outside world.

When was the last time you truly immersed yourself in a self-care ritual? It doesn’t always mean you need to book a massage or a pedicure, although that’s nice too. It can be with even your most basic daily activities. Take a moment to be present during these times of rejuvenation, whether it's taking time to move your body, practicing a 5-minute meditation, or just enjoying a quiet cup of tea. These small acts of self-love, when done consistently, can have profound effects on your overall well-being and happiness.

Remember, taking care of yourself is not selfish; it's an act of self-preservation. By prioritizing your own needs and ensuring you get what you require to thrive, you are better equipped to serve others with love and authenticity. Self-care lays the foundation for how you show up in both your work and personal life.

Just as we need food and water to function, I believe we need self-care to nourish our souls. It is through these intentional acts of love towards ourselves that we replenish our energy reserves and find balance amidst life's demands.

So take that much-needed break and honor yourself by making self-care an integral part of your daily routine. Remember, by nurturing yourself first, you’re able to give those around you the best of you, instead of what’s left of you. Because no one can serve from an empty vessel.

With kindness,
Monic
